The Babe

Lets start with the babes first tastes… a puree.

Things to keep in mind before you start the fun and easy process of making your own baby food.

Ice cube trays are clutch for storing the baby food. Beware though it can be rather addicting and your baby may just over take your freezer. I debated buying a deep freezer, I know, I know, I am ridiculous.

Small food processors are easier to work with because you can make smaller amounts quickly. I recommend the KitchenAid mini food processor. A big plus is you can get it in really bright and fun colors. I am sucker for cute packaging.

Start simple both for you and the babe. Rice cereal is the most popular option and then move onto some basic greens and fruits. Bananas are always a good way to start but beware only make what you will need, nasty black mush will occur quickly. Ick!

Keep in mind that after a month or two of eating foods the babe is going to get bored, basic seasoning is great way to entice the pallet and make them go after it again. Cinnamon was my best friend, there was time when it went on EVERYTHING.

If you have a skinny baby like I did you may be looking for a way to add a little chub to the all the cuteness. If that is the case then you add BUTTER not margarine but butter. I may appear to be channeling Paula Dean and thoughts of chubby 10 year olds run through your mind. But, research has shown that a high fat diet is actually just what a young babe needs. Remember that you don’t need veggies soaked in butter but they sure do. It is all about brain development and need for fat to do stuff in the brain, yep that’s right stuff. I am not a doctor but I promise you a doctor will tell you “yes” butter is not terrible. Just wait a few months the doctor will tell you to give them Whole Milk and it took quite a bit of convincing to get me on board with that one.
